My Story
Cristina Popovici does not sketch new works prior to making them, instead there is a process of internalization where energy and emotion grow and build until they burst through her gestures and transpose on the canvas. She always says
”there is no separation between body, mind and spirit, in the sense that the body is like a vessel for the energy to express itself. Therefore where I get inspired from is not as relevant as how I process it.”
Popovici has a classical training in Fine Arts and adopted the fundamental European aspects of classical arts into her practice of abstract expressionism. Not only has this allowed her full self expression, but through this she has gained confidence in artistic decision making from her classical training, and freedom to explore through abstract expressionism.
She has produced to date a large body of artworks , exploring with different surfaces such as: traditional canvas, Perspex, PVC, fibreglass, and metal stencils, and also different paints ranging from industrial paint, glass paint, ink, plaster, acrylic, spray paints and oils. These materials are a tool for her to express a vocabulary of techniques that she has accumulated over the years.
Lately, Popovici has put more focus on action painting, where she analyses the development of mark making from abrupt and instant brush strokes to slow motion pouring. In this way, motion is present in her works as energy preserved in the artistic media she uses. In some artworks, motion is used to disrupt the flow of the paint and create intensity through lines, in others she has allowed paint to settle and seep into calming rhythms.
