My Story
Marian Rennie is a well known and established Melbourne artist who has worked with a variety of materials across many disciplines including fabric design, puppetry and wall murals. She has done two installations at the National Gallery of Victoria one for a high profile wedding and the other for Pacific Dunlop’s Centenary celebrations. She was also a finalist in the Portia Geach Memorial Art Award.
Marian has worked as Artistic Director and puppet maker for the ABC’s satirical series ‘Rubbery Figures, done costume design for the Australian Ballet, Handspan Theater and Circus Oz. A highlight of her career was a 1300 square meter enviromental mural for the children’s wing in the Goulbourn Valley Base Hospital.
She has exhibited widely in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, New Zealand, the UK, Tokyo and Dubai and her work is held in private collections throughout the world.
After many years of living and working in the cultural vibrancy of the inner city suburbs of Darlinghurst, Collingwood and Fitzroy in the 70’s she established her gallery and work space in Williamstown in the 80’s where she lived and worked for many years.
She left city life in 2004 and moved back to the family farm in rural Victoria taking inspiration from the landscape of her childhood.
Marian uses a vibrant colour palette to capture a moment suspended in time. Her figures are often caught in a dreamlike reverie which transcends time and space. She draws inspiration from the world around her and her iconic landscapes distill the essence of the Australian topography. A glimpse through a window, a still life, or a vase of flowers are given an elevated status worthy of attention giving the viewer a new appreciation of the ordinary and the otherwise mundane.
